Larry Aydlette, culture editor: Classic movies around town

“A boy’s best friend is his mother.” And Norman Bates should know. Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” should not be terrifying after so many years of mom jokes and shower parodies, but it still retains its primal horror. So a rare chance to see it on a big screen should not be missed. Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events present the movie, with a special introduction, on Sunday at various local theaters: 7 p.m. at the Cobb Downtown at the Gardens, and 2 and 7 p.m. showings at Regal Royal Palm, Cinemark Boynton Beach, Cinemark Palace and Shadowood in Boca and at the Treasure Coast Mall theaters in Jensen Beach. It repeats on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Looking for another big-screen classic movie experience? Here’s looking at “Casablanca,” judged by many to be the greatest movie of Hollywood’s golden era. It’s certainly the most quotable. It screens Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 and 7:30 p.m. at the Cinepolis in Jupiter.

I’ve loved Jacksonville’s Allman Brothers Band since the first time I saw them play a free concert among the frisbee players and anti-war demonstrators on the University of Florida’s oak-shaded Plaza in the spring of 1970.

Saturday night, the band’s original drummer and current West Palm Beach resident Butch Trucks plays in Boca Raton with second generation ABB musicians, including his guitarist son, Vaylor, and Berry Oakley, Jr., the son of the band’s founding bass player.

The location: The Funky Biscuit, 303 SE Mizner Blvd., Royal Palm Place, Boca Raton, 561-395-2929.

090611 (Thomas Cordy/The Palm Beach Post)--- WEST PALM BEACH-- Priyanka Shanbag (cq), West Palm Beach, has taught yoga at the West Palm Beach Public Library for two years. She teaches two classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the third floor auditorium. The classes are open to the public and attendees are encouraged to make donations after class. "I taught (yoga) for 13 years in Detroit before I came here," she said.

By the end of a week in front of the computer, my spine is in need of serious reshaping. So this weekend I’ll head for the magical yoga classes in Mandel Public Library. Two classes are offered on Saturdays in the third-floor auditorium: at 9:45 and 11 a.m. They’re super-popular, so arrive early and unfurl your own mat to claim a spot.

Appropriate for all levels, the classes are donation only, so also bring cash to drop in the box at the end.

After class, I’ll undoubtedly unwind with a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee (there’s a Dunkin’ on the library’s ground floor) and a few of the latest magazines on the Mandel racks.

The library is at 411 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach.
