Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late British jazz/pop singer Amy Winehouse, announced today that the foundation he heads plans to form a partnership with the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation.

“We’d like to establish a permanent presence here,” said Winehouse in an address to students this morning.

Winehouse was a celebrated artist who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction before she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at age 27.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was established by the singer’s family after her death, contributes to several music organizations around the world. It also funds school-based alcohol and drug education programs from 70 offices in the U.K., according to Jane Winehouse, Mitch’s wife and Amy’s stepmother.

Dreyfoos, a public arts school for the performing and visual arts, seemed like a good fit for the Foundation, said Mitch Winehouse. He said Amy briefly attended a similar school in London on scholarship.

Dreyfoos Foundation executive director Kris Lindinsky said donations would be used to assist students with lessons and travel to competitions.

Mitch Winehouse said the first donation will come from a fundraiser underwritten by Nieman Marcus to be held Friday in Boca Raton.
