To prepare for an upcoming two-and-a-half years of construction, the Norton Museum of Art will close May 30 for five weeks, then reopen July 5 with free admission through 2018.

When it re-opens, visitors will temporarily use the museum’s original 1941 entrance on South Olive Avenue. A free shuttle from the parking lot will be available.

Current exhibitions including Georgia O’Keeffe, Stettheimer, Torr, Zorach: Women Modernists in New York, Photographs and Video Art from the DeWoody Collection and the loan of Edgar Degas’ Portrait of Mlle. Hortense Valpincon will be on display through May 15.

The Museum is beginning an expansion designed by the international architectural firm of Foster + Partners, under the direction of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster.  The enlargement will alter the look of the building and change its main entrance to face South Dixie Highway.

But before major construction can begin, parts of the museum’s extensive collection must be secured. In addition, crews will remove and store the glass ceiling seascape created by artist Dale Chihuly.

Galleries on the east side of the museum will remain open with highlights from the American, Chinese, Contemporary and European art as well as Photography while work is done on the west side.

Visitors will still be able to view masterpieces including Jackson Pollock’s Night Mist,  Edward Hopper’s August in the City, and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Pelvis with the Moon—New Mexico.

The Norton’s popular Thursday evening Art After Dark programs and Family Studio on Saturday will continue in July and during construction.
