We’ve run the gauntlet of (most of) summer to arrive here at the threshhold of September, greeted by its promises of Pumpkin Spice Lattes at Starbucks, Spiced Pear Smoothies at Tropical Smoothie Cafe, cinnamon brooms at Publix and an entertainment calendar that’s starting to put on weight like a turkey bulking up for Thanksgiving.

1. 2. Museum Day Live returns Sept. 26. All you need is a Museum Day Live ticket, and you and a friend will get in free to the institutions participating in the “Smithsonian” magazine program. The list include 95 Florida museums, including 25 in South Florida. more information here
3. Cinepolis, the new luxury movie theater in Jupiter, is launching a new movie series called “Cinepolis Handpicked.” The offerings: “The Princess Bride” (Sept. 1), “Jaws” (Sept. 8), “Faberge: A Life of Its Own” (Sept. 9), “Blade Runner: The Final Cut” (Sept. 15), “Jupiter” (Sept. 22) and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (Sept. 29). more information here
4. Frights Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds is already preparing for the big Halloween “boo!” The terrifying team will hold a casting call for “scare actors” at noon Sept. 12 at Perfect Vodka Amphitheater. They also need volunteer makeup artists. more information here

5. PalmCon, the county’s largest comics-and-collectibles show, will set up shop Sept. 26-27 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach. Fans can expect a costume contest, movie screenings, vendors galore and appearances by comic-book artists and sci-fi and horror actors. more information here
6. Countdown 2 Zero will fill the Palm Beach County Convention Center with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, puppies and kittens Sept. 12. The free adoption event is a collaborative effort of more than two dozen local animal rescue organizations to save the lives of animals in Palm Beach County. Organizers hope to adopt more than 500 pets in a single day. more information here

7. Flavor Palm Beach makes pricey meals more palatable to foodies throughout September, when multi-course lunches start at $20 and dinners start at $30 at some of the most popular restaurants in the area. The promotion benefits Palm Beach County Food Bank. more information here
