Labor Day is traditionally summer’s last gasp, although our summer weather never takes the hint until well into October.
While the heat and humidity overstay their welcome this long weekend, our culture writers refuse to hide inside, except for a few hours binge watching HBO’s excellent new “We Need a Hero” mini-series (from The Wire’s David Simon, among others.)
Here’s what else we’re doing:
Liz Balmaseda, Food Editor: The last of the summer dining deals
It’s a good weekend to check out Flavor Palm Beach month menus – the dining-deal month kicked off Tuesday.
With multicourse lunches starting at $20 and dinners starting at $30, consider this a 30-day window to sample dishes at top, otherwise pricey eateries, enjoy the food, the vibe and, in some cases, the glorious views.
On my must-visit list: Sandpiper’s Cove Restaurant & Bar, offers a sweeping view of the Old Port Cove marina. The members-only eatery is open to the public for dinner service, specifically to diners who order from the Flavor Palm Beach menu. The prix fixe menu costs $35; reservations are required.
Sandpiper’s Cove: 116 Lakeshore Drive (at Old Port Cove), North Palm Beach; call 561-626-2280 for reservations; SandpipersCove.com
Flavor Palm Beach: See full list of participating restaurants here.
Barbara Marshall, features writer: Boat tour of north county waterfront bars
I must be heat-addled because I’m actually considering joining WMRF’s crazy boat parade Sunday. The KVJ crew (Kevin, Virginia and Kevin)will lead Bud Light’s Best Boat Bar Tour of north county boating bars (based on bar information provided by stories in the Palm Beach Post on north county and south county waterfront bars.)
The tour starts at noon at Tommy Bahama in Harbourside Place in Jupiter, heads to Guanabana’s in Jupiter at 2 p.m., then wraps up at Waterway Cafe in Palm Beach Gardens at 4 p.m. Landlubbers welcome.

Staci Sturrock, features writer: Parents Night Out at South Florida Science Center
Need a sitter for Friday night? Let the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium watch the kids for you. From 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, children ages 4 to 12 are invited to the center for a visit to the reptile lab (where they’ll learn all about alligators), a turtle shell craft, exploration of the center and its current exhbit, “Eww! What’s Eating You?”
Cost is $30 per child, and each additional child is $15. For information, call 561-832-2026. The museum is at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach.
Larry Aydlette, Culture Editor: A new movie from a master
There was a time when the movies of Peter Bogdanovich were a big deal – “The Last Picture Show,” “Paper Moon,” “What’s Up, Doc” and “Mask,” among others. In recent years, he’s been better known for writing Hollywood history books and making appearances on shows such as “The Sopranos.” But as someone said online recently, “Never count an old auteur out.”
His new movie, “She’s Funny That Way,” is getting a limited release and is only playing in two Palm Beach County theaters – the Movies of Lake Worth and the Movies of Delray.
But if you like an adult comedy in the Woody Allen-Paul Mazursky vein, with elements of screwball comedy and backstage Broadway farce, this film about a director who pays a prostitute (Imogen Poots) to get out of the business and then can’t quite get her out of his life is worth seeking out. And it’s got an able cast headlined by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. (Look for a very famous cameo appearance right at the end.)
Also recommended: Want to enjoy the novelty of seeing an older film on something other than your 53-inch TV screen or laptop? Two opportunities in the coming days: “Stripes,” the Bill Murray comedy, plays Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cinemark theaters in Boynton Beach and Boca Raton. And on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., “Jaws” screens at the Cinepolis theater in Jupiter.
Movies of Lake Worth, 7380 Lake Worth Rd., Lake Worth; 561-968-4545.
Movies of Delray, 7421 Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach; 561-638-0020.
Cinemark Theaters, Boynton Beach, 1151 N. Congress Ave., Boynton Beach; 561-752-9797.
Cinemark Theaters, Boca Raton, 3200 Airport Rd., Boca Raton; 561-395-4695.
